Lars Hierta (1801–1872) was an industrialist, publicist, book publisher, and parliamentarian. Hierta founded, among other things, Liljeholmens Stearinfabrik, Munksjö Pappersbruk, Nya Ångslups-bolaget, and the newspaper Aftonbladet. The foundation was established in 1877 through a donation from Lars Hierta's widow, Wilhelmina Hierta.

The foundation accepts applications from individual researchers for projects in all subject areas. Applications can also be made by literary societies and organizations with research-informative tasks.

The foundation also accepts applications from charitable organizations working for social purposes. Additionally, support is provided for charitable crafts and industries, as well as further education and specialized studies, beyond academic degrees, for individuals working in the social field.
